You Can Bike Too would not be possible without the support of our incredible volunteers. They are each unique and skilled in different ways and truly do keep our wheels spinning by showing up! So, each month we will be featuring an interview with one of our volunteers. They truly are Ordinary Superheroes!
This month's volunteer is... Amazing Ames!
What is Ames' role?
Ames is our Meeter and Greeter and she is pretty darn good at it! Her role is to help make people feel welcome when they first arrive, taking her place with pride and joy at the front desk where people register. it wouldn't be the same without her!
What Ames has to say about volunteering...
What do you enjoy about volunteering?
In general I like helping people and meeting lots of different people. At You Can Bike Too I like seeing people having a good time - new experiences for them! I'm a meeter and greeter! I'm at the front desk- saying hello, write receipts when people pay to go on the bikes.
Which is your favourite bike and why?
They're all great! If I have to pick...the side by side ..peddle with your legs...maybe the scooter! I did rather fall in love with that when we first got it! It kind of glides along! You don't have to do too much...it's fun!
Tell us about your own cycling 'history'
When I was little my arms were a bit weak so I had a lot of trouble learning to crawl. So my mum and her friend borrowed a skate board- I was laid on it and I did the rest! I remember having a bike with stabilisers- I rode it in Brighton but it was a bit hilly! I fell off but I didn't let that stop me! When my stabilizers came off I learnt to ride a 2 wheeler. Now I have a bluey pink kind of bike.
On Mondays I cycle to Tai Chi - not too far. I don't ride on the road - the cars make me nervous...I ride on the pavement but I'm very careful. I also have a tandem - mum and me ride together if the weather is nice - we go out for the day - pick a good area and head out for a ride!
