Every other Sunday morning the You Can Bike Too project has a session for families which include a youngster with a disability. Yes, these sessions are about cycling all together but there's also a very important other element...it's social! These together times give parents and carers an opportunity to talk together as well as cycle. This is a huge part of what makes these Sundays a success. You can really feel the 'buzz' in the air!
Laura – Mum of Leah gave us her views
Leah is 13 years old and has learning disabilities (Retts Syndrome), she lives at home with her parents and her 11 year old brother.
“It’s brilliant! – especially meeting up with other mum’s out of school, the young people can meet their friends too –It’s so sociable. Seeing them together on bikes is really good! Leah is a wheelchair user most of the time. She’s always been interested in bikes and whenever we've been out – she goes across to them. Here in the park she’s with her friends, they are going round on bikes and so is she! The others are stopping and saying “hi” to her as they go round the route... It’s amazing to think she’s actually on a bike! She went on two today! If someone had said to me a couple of years ago that Leah would be on a bike...I wouldn't have believed it! It gets the family together as well...that has to be good!” - Laura, mother
