Every time someone comes and sees one of our bikes they are amazed and amused. You can just see their playful side creeping up to the surface! And each of our bikes is unique in its very own way and are best for different types of people. So, we think each of them deserves its own story to be told. And here is featured bike number two!
Today's feature bike - The Van Raam Velo Plus
There is something very special about this one. This was the first bike that the project received funding for. The project team voted to buy this because although it is one of the most expensive, it served the needs of the people most likely to have never had the opportunity to experience cycling! Often, people with higher support needs are forgotten or put aside in projects like ours because of the high costs associated with equipment and adaptations. We are keen that this doesn't happen - hence, this amazing bicycle!
What makes this bike unique?
Who is it best for?
This cycle was designed for people in a wheelchair who need to stay in their wheelchair. It is amazing because the person in the wheelchair is at the front, feeling the wind in their hair and the true cycling experience. Often, the person pedalling at the back is a support worker or a parent. Perhaps a parent who thought that their child would never be able to cycle. Now, they can cycle together...and it's both nerve racking and exciting for all! People with a variety of abilities and ages have ridden this bike....we have even had a parent strap a buggy with their little one to the front!
Who funded the bike?
This bike was donated by the Aiming High for Disabled Children Funds.
What do the volunteers and riders say about it?
"A couple of weeks ago we saw a young boy, his mum and sisters take part in family cycling for the first time just because we had this bike! The sisters were so excited to cycle with their brother and their mum - they were going home to tell dad that he'd have to come next time! It really enables wheelchair users who can't get out of their wheelchair to take part in cycling!" - Janie, cycling volunteer
